Francesco Clemente
Born in 1952 in Naples, Italy, Francesco Clemente studied architecture in Rome, where he met his friend and mentor Alighiero e Boetti, who persuaded him to pursue a career in art. Clemente has since worked in a variety of fine-art media, including drawing, printmaking, oils, graphics, sculpture, mosaic, and fresco. In the mid-1970s, Clemente established a studio in Chennai, India, where he became fascinated by the traditional art and crafts of the region and by religious and folk traditions. An enthusiastic member of the neo-expressionist art movement in Western Europe, he features a number of motifs in his work, including the human form; sexuality; mythic and spiritual imagery; dreams; and childhood memories.
Clemente’s work is displayed internationally, at the Guggenheim Museum, both in New York City and Bilbao; the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the Tate Modern in London. He lives in Greenwich Village in New York City and is represented by Maruani Mercier in Brussels, Belgium.
