Robert Kushner
Robert Kushner is a contemporary painter, printmaker, and collage artist. He is a leading figure of the Pattern and Decoration movement, which champions decorative and craft-based arts as equivalent in significance and value to fine art. During the early 1970s, he was known for his performance art, particularly his costume designs and embroidery work. His incorporation of edible clothing, audience participation, and nudity in his performances was particularly radical.
Inspired by artists such as Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe, Qi Baishi, and Ito Jakuchu, Kushner richly layers depictions of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Skillfully implementing a variety of media, including paint, ink, paper, and fabric collage, he combines natural, representational elements with abstract, geometric forms using bold color harmonies and fluid lines.
Kushner’s work has appeared in exhibitions across the globe, including at the Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art, the Venice Biennale, and the Whitney Biennial. The Brooklyn Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York CIty, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Whitney Museum in New York City all include pieces of his in their permanent collections.
Kushner is represented by D.C. Moore Gallery in New York City.
